About Prairie by Coco

Thank you for taking the time to visit our website and showing interest in our story.

My name is Coralie, and I am the proud owner of Prairie by Coco. Over the past two years, we have written the first chapters of the Prairie story, and with your support, we aim to turn these chapters into volumes.

Your love and encouragement mean everything to us. Thank you for being a part of our journey.

THE STORY

Prairie by Coco is a small, female-owned business that began at the end of 2020. After moving to a new apartment in Antwerp with her partner, Coralie was in search of beautiful but low maintenance plants to bring life and warmth to their home. This is when she discovered the world of dried flowers.

Despite searching for a minimalistic but colourful dried bouquet, Coralie was unable to find a local florist who could recreate one. In fact, when she finally ordered her first two dried bouquets online, she was quite disappointed and had to rearrange them. However, she soon found that taking care of flowers was both fun and therapeutic.

With plenty of free time during the COVID-19 lockdown and a need for a creative outlet, the idea of a dried flower business was born.

Today, Prairie by Coco offers over 50 bouquet designs and has sold hundreds of personalised bouquets across Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent, Amsterdam, Paris, and London.

At Prairie by Coco, we believe that natural decoration and home objects are essential elements of a mindful and conscious lifestyle. That's why Coralie started creating beautiful beeswax candles to complement her dried flower bouquets and bring a warm, inviting glow to any space.

When Coralie first set out to make candles, she knew that she wanted to use the best materials possible. After researching and experimenting with various types of wax, she discovered beeswax - a natural and sustainable resource with a warm, honey-like scent that perfectly complemented her aesthetic.

But as Coralie delved deeper into the benefits of beeswax, she also realized that it could be a solution for her friends and family who suffered from pollen allergies and respiratory issues. Beeswax candles are known for their ability to purify the air by releasing negative ions that neutralize pollutants and allergens, making them a natural and effective way to alleviate symptoms without relying on medication.

Prairie takes pride in using only the highest-quality, sustainably sourced beeswax and botanicals to create candles that not only look and smell beautiful, but also promote a healthier and more eco-friendly lifestyle. Whether you're looking to add a touch of natural elegance to your home or seeking a natural remedy for allergies and respiratory issues, we're here to help you achieve your goals with our all-natural beeswax candles.

OUR MISSION

At Prairie, we believe in filling homes with minimalistic and natural decoration that lasts a long time. Our mission is to repurpose natural materials in the most sustainable and eco-friendly way possible.

We do this by selecting premium suppliers in the area, creating bouquets and candles in our atelier in Antwerp, and avoiding plastic as much as we can.

We also repurpose old bouquets, and make sure to reuse all kinds of material: from broken flowers to leftover beeswax, paper, and all sorts of packaging. Did you know that even our raffia rope is eco-friendly? It comes from our grandmother who collected it for over 10 years and kept it for reuse!

That is what Prairie is all about: we are committed to creating a beautiful and sustainable portfolio of premium products that complement one another and contribute to the circular economy.

Why beeswax candles?

At Prairie, we make candles using a type of wax that is far less known, but much more sustainable, called beeswax. We are confident that you will love our candles as much as we do, and to help you understand the amazing benefits of our candles, we have outlined some interesting facts about beeswax below.

Enjoy the read and spread the word!

Where does Beeswax come from?

Beeswax is primarily made from honey.

Honeybees use beeswax to lay their eggs and create the structure of their honeycomb. When beeswax needs to be extracted from the hive for cleaning purposes, the bees will create new wax and the old beeswax can be repurposed for candle making.

By doing this, we are participating in the circular economy of beekeeping.

Why is beekeeping important?

Taking good care of our honeybees is essential as they are becoming endangered. Beekeeping is an intense and time-consuming job for beekeepers, and making candles out of beeswax is a great way to avoid any waste from the honey-making process while also providing financial support to our local beekeepers.

The characteristics of Beeswax

Beeswax is the oldest known material used for candles and remains one of the cleanest burning candles. It is 100% natural, free of toxins, and acts as a natural air purifier.

BEESWAX CANDLES BURN LONGER AND BETTER

  • Beeswax has a higher melting point than other waxes, so it burns longer, drips less, and produces less soot.

  • Beeswax candles emit the brightest, most warm-toned, and healthful light within the same spectrum as the sun.

BEESWAX CANDLES ARE NATURAL AND MORE SUSTAINABLE

  • Beeswax is a naturally occurring substance created by bees. Pure beeswax candles are chemical-free and biodegradable. They naturally smell wonderful, just like honeycomb.

  • Unlike other candles, beeswax candles purify the air in the room and invigorate the lungs.

  • They are among the most sustainable candles on the market, offering a high value for money and a clean, long-lasting burn.

BEESWAX CANDLES WILL ALLEVIATE YOUR ALLERGIES

Beeswax candles release negative ions when burned, which neutralize the positive ions of air pollutants, reducing indoor pollutants and purifying the air.

Lighting our beeswax candles can effectively alleviate asthma, allergies, and hay fever symptoms, as well as allergies from airborne pollen, dust, mites, dirt, or other air pollutants.

    COMPARING BEESWAX TO OTHER WAXES

Regular scented candles are not a smart choice because they are often cheap and not sustainable. Most candles on the market are made from paraffin wax and are a source of indoor air pollution, putting off chemicals that are considered just as dangerous as secondhand smoke. Paraffin is a byproduct of petroleum, so it releases highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned, which are known carcinogens. Moreover, many of these scented candles have wicks that contain heavy metals that are released into the air when burned.

Soy wax is mostly produced on an industrial scale on overseas continents with pesticides and fertilizers, contributing to ongoing mass deforestation around the world. Its production is linked to a multitude of negative environmental and socio-economic impacts, and it is not fully eco-friendly or sustainable.

For these reasons, we are strong advocates for using beeswax in candle-making and hope to educate more people on this topic through Prairie by Coco.

    SUSTAINABLE & ECO-FRIENDLY

When it comes to reducing your carbon footprint, choosing a dried flower bouquet over cut flowers is a simple but impactful choice.

The fresh flower trade is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, with many flowers flown in from distant countries in refrigerated planes. By contrast, dried flowers have a much smaller environmental impact. They require no excessive water usage, pesticides, or wasteful packaging.

At Prairie, our dried flower bouquets are a timeless alternative to traditional cut flowers. They can stay vibrant and beautiful for up to several years, meaning you can enjoy their natural beauty without the environmental cost of constantly purchasing new flowers.

By choosing dried flowers, you can help decrease the number of flowers grown and shipped around the world, making it a smart and sustainable choice for both your budget and the planet.

    EASY MAINTENANCE

There is no need to actively maintain your bouquet, as dried flowers do not need water. (how great is that?)

How to care for your dried flowers:

    • Be careful: dried flowers are much more fragile than fresh cut flowers.
    • No water: There is no need to water your dried flower bouquet.
    • Avoid putting the bouquet in direct sunlight: It may affect the vibrance of particular dried grasses.
    • Keep in mind that your bouquet can last up to at least six months and more, so give it a nice place of its own!
