About Beeswax Candles

At Prairie, we make candles using a type of wax that is far less known, but much more sustainable, called beeswax. We are confident that you will love our candles as much as we do, and to help you understand the amazing benefits of our candles, we have outlined some interesting facts about beeswax below.

Enjoy the read and spread the word!

Where does Beeswax come from?

Beeswax is primarily made from honey.

Honeybees use beeswax to lay their eggs and create the structure of their honeycomb. When beeswax needs to be extracted from the hive for cleaning purposes, the bees will create new wax and the old beeswax can be repurposed for candle making.

By doing this, we are participating in the circular economy of beekeeping.

Why is beekeeping important?

Taking good care of our honeybees is essential as they are becoming endangered. Beekeeping is an intense and time-consuming job for beekeepers, and making candles out of beeswax is a great way to avoid any waste from the honey-making process while also providing financial support to our local beekeepers.

The characteristics of Beeswax

Beeswax is the oldest known material used for candles and remains one of the cleanest burning candles. It is 100% natural, free of toxins, and acts as a natural air purifier.

BEESWAX CANDLES BURN LONGER AND BETTER

  • Beeswax has a higher melting point than other waxes, so it burns longer, drips less, and produces less soot.

  • Beeswax candles emit the brightest, most warm-toned, and healthful light within the same spectrum as the sun.

BEESWAX CANDLES ARE NATURAL AND MORE SUSTAINABLE

  • Beeswax is a naturally occurring substance created by bees. Pure beeswax candles are chemical-free and biodegradable. They naturally smell wonderful, just like honeycomb.

  • Unlike other candles, beeswax candles purify the air in the room and invigorate the lungs.

  • They are among the most sustainable candles on the market, offering a high value for money and a clean, long-lasting burn.

BEESWAX CANDLES WILL ALLEVIATE YOUR ALLERGIES

Beeswax candles release negative ions when burned, which neutralize the positive ions of air pollutants, reducing indoor pollutants and purifying the air.

Lighting our beeswax candles can effectively alleviate asthma, allergies, and hay fever symptoms, as well as allergies from airborne pollen, dust, mites, dirt, or other air pollutants.

    COMPARING BEESWAX TO OTHER WAXES

Regular scented candles are not a smart choice because they are often cheap and not sustainable. Most candles on the market are made from paraffin wax and are a source of indoor air pollution, putting off chemicals that are considered just as dangerous as secondhand smoke. Paraffin is a byproduct of petroleum, so it releases highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned, which are known carcinogens. Moreover, many of these scented candles have wicks that contain heavy metals that are released into the air when burned.

Soy wax is mostly produced on an industrial scale on overseas continents with pesticides and fertilizers, contributing to ongoing mass deforestation around the world. Its production is linked to a multitude of negative environmental and socio-economic impacts, and it is not fully eco-friendly or sustainable.

For these reasons, we are strong advocates for using beeswax in candle-making and hope to educate more people on this topic through Prairie by Coco.
