Candle Care & Safety Guidelines

At Prairie by Coco, we care strongly about your safety and candle experience. Please read the below instructions carefully and follow them to prevent any unwanted hazards and to keep your candles in the best shape possible. 

I.  PREPARE AND PROTECT THE SURFACE

Always remove all the packaging on and around your candle.

Protect the candle and avoid any hazards by:

• Placing your candle on a flat, protected, non-flammable, and heat resistant surface, from which it can easily removed. No wooden surface. If possible, try placing the candle in a candle holder, such as our coasters or trays. Beware of glass candle holders that can heat up and explode from wrong usage. Prairie by Coco doesn't take any responsibility for injuries or broken objects related to the surface or holder the candle was placed in/ on.   
• Keeping your candle at least 30 cm away from any flammable objects (curtains, decorations, etc.)
• Placing your candle away from places where they could be spilled or forgotten.
• Keeping your candle out of reach from young children and pets. Beeswax is a natural product but can potentially be harmful if swallowed. Do not eat the candles.
• Keeping your candle separated from other lit candles by a minimum of 10 cm. Candles placed too close to one another may be badly burnt or produce soot.
• Keeping your candles out of airflow to prevent rapid and uneven burning, or soot formation. Candles burn best in still air.
• Keeping your candle away from a heat source. The higher the temperature around the candle, the more dangerous it is to burn.

II.  PREPARE THE CANDLE

Prior to each candle lighting, make sure to:

• Clean the candle’s burn pool by taking out any debris that could catch fire or cause flaring. Objects such as matches, insects, decorations or bits of wick can ignite. Your candle may then overheat and ignite suddenly.
• Trim the wick(s) to 0,5 to 1 cm before lighting to ensure an even and smoke-free burn. If the wick is too long, the wax may accumulate during combustion or the flame may rise too high and produce soot.

• Check if the candle jar is still intact. If the jar is damaged or shows a crack in the glass, don’t use the candle anymore. 

III.  ENJOY AND KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR CANDLE

Time to light your candle! Candles are made to create a cozy and enjoyable experience indoors. Our beeswax candles emit a wonderful smell, shine a warm light, and help purify the air in your living space(s).

Please keep in mind that the flame and warm wax can be dangerous. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Always extinguish your candles before leaving the room or going to bed.

It is also advised to turn off any candles that smoke, wobble or whose flame has become uncontrollable. Please contact us if this is happening with your candle. 

Finally, never move a candle while it’s burning. 

IV.  EXTINGUISH THE CANDLE

A candle should not be burned at once for more than 4 hours.

Blowing out your candle is not recommended, especially when it is in a container like a photophore: the wick may continue to smoke and glow, and the liquid wax may ignite or be thrown on your face.

Also, never use liquid or water to extinguish a candle. Water can cause splashes of melted wax to explode and blow up the candle jar.

For safety reasons, always extinguish your candle with a candle extinguisher or candle snuffer to prevent wicks from drifting away from the center and to avoid wax splashes. That will also help increase the candle's burning time.

V.  CENTER THE WICK

After each burn, when the wick has cooled down, and the wax is still molten, adjust the wick and make sure it is centered. 

VI.  REPURPOSE THE CANDLE

Never let your candle burn itself out completely.

When the wax has burnt down to 1 cm from the bottom, the candle should be extinguished. Leaving your candle to burn completely, may start a fire.

In order to keep the circular economy going, feel free to bring back your beeswax candle leftovers to Prairie by Coco, so we can recycle it. Another option is to reuse the beeswax at home. Take a look at this website for some ideas. 

Storage Guidelines 

Our long-lasting candles are made of 100% pure beeswax. While our candles are designed to have a long shelf life, it's important to note that the natural beeswax color may fade over time, leading to a process called "blooming". Blooming is a natural occurrence in 100% beeswax candles, and creates a subtle whitish or colorful layer on the candle, adding to the mystique and beauty of beeswax.

If you prefer the look of a newly-made candle, you can easily remove the bloom with a warm, soft cloth. However, if you want to prolong the aging phase of your candle, we recommend following our storage guidelines:

• Store your candles in a cool and dry place, around or below room temperature.
• Find a dark place to store the candles, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. The candles might melt, or their colors and scents may fade more quickly.
• Avoid storing candles in plastic bags or containers, as this can trap moisture and cause the candles to stick or become misshapen. To keep dust off your candles, it is best to store beeswax candles in a breathable material, such as a cloth or paper.
• Keep the candles stored upright to prevent bending or warping.
• Store your candles away from other scented items, as beeswax can absorb scents from its environment.
